Transmission and distribution

  • Transmission and distribution are two key components of the electricity grid, delivering electricity from power plants to homes and businesses.  Transmission involves moving electricity at high voltage levels, while distribution involves delivering electricity at lower voltage levels. Efficient and reliable transmission and distribution systems are essential for ensuring electricity is delivered safely and reliably to consumers.
  • Transmission is the process of transmitting electricity from power plants to nearby substations over long distances at high voltage levels. This is accomplished using a system of transmission lines, or high-voltage power lines, which are built to reduce power losses across long distances. Typically, transmission voltage
    levels fall between 110 kV and 765 kV.
  • Distribution, on the other hand, involves the process of delivering electricity at lower voltage levels from local substations to homes and businesses. This is done through a network of lower voltage power lines, often called distribution lines, which are designed to deliver electricity to individual consumers. The voltage level used for distribution is typically in the range of 11 kV to 33 kV.
  • Both transmission and distribution systems are critical to the functioning of the electricity grid. Efficient and reliable transmission and distribution systems  are essential for ensuring that electricity is delivered safely and reliably to consumers.
